POW MAG
× Skrilla
Reviving documentary storytelling for the internet generation — and making it viral in five days.
A format dormant for fifteen years — reborn for a new generation.
POW MAG is one of the most respected names in hip-hop journalism. When Skrilla — one of the fastest-rising artists in the game — emerged as a story worth telling, founder Jeff Weiss reached out to NUIRDEK to revive a documentary format he hadn't produced in over fifteen years and modernize it entirely for today's internet.
NUIRDEK traveled from Texas to Philadelphia with a production assistant and writer Drew Millard to spend a full day with Skrilla. The mission: don't make another standard interview — make something that felt like real access to a real person.
Access over interview. Culture over production.
Questions were developed to reveal character, not extract quotes. Activities were chosen to put Skrilla in environments that generated honest, unscripted moments. The edit blended documentary pacing with internet culture — memes, Kai Cenat references, LeBron James clips tied to Skrilla lyrics. Tour footage of Skrilla alongside Matt Ox added narrative depth.
118,000 views in five days. Highest-performing video in POW MAG history.
The Instagram version became the highest-performing video in POW MAG's entire history. The YouTube upload hit 20,000 views in its first six days on a brand-new channel with zero subscribers. NUIRDEK's own behind-the-scenes version generated an additional 44,000 views simultaneously.
You killed it. This is fire. We'd love to work together again.
— Jeff Weiss, Founder, POW MAGAudiences aren't tired of long-form. They're tired of boring.
This project is proof that depth and virality are not opposites. When storytelling is real, distribution is layered, and creative direction respects both the artist and the audience — the numbers follow. NUIRDEK delivered POW MAG's biggest digital moment ever on a single production trip.
Cultural Fluency
Integrating memes and viral culture made the documentary feel native to the internet rather than produced by a media brand.
Pre-Built Distribution
Mapping the rollout before production meant every clip had a platform, a purpose, and an audience from day one.
Access Over Interview
Showing Skrilla's world rather than asking him to describe it created a fundamentally different level of audience connection.
